Luis Enrique hails Barcelona's 'team of champions' after Copa del Rey win

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique hailed the character of his "team of champions" after they completed the Spanish domestic double by outlasting Sevilla to win a dramatic Copa del Rey final 2-0 in extra time at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Barca looked up against it when Javier Mascherano was red carded for a professional foul just past the half-hour mark, and Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega hit a post soon after half-time.

But the Camp Nou outfit defended well despite being a man down, and the numbers were evened up right on the 90-minute mark when Banega became the second player sent off by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande.

Barca then made their extra class and energy pay as Jordi Alba and Neymar netted in each half of extra time to finally see off Sevilla's challenge and take the Copa trophy for the second consecutive season to go with the La Liga title won just last week.

The Blaugrana coach told his post-game news conference that over the season, and in the Copa final, his team had been able to come through difficulties faced to end the campaign spectacularly.

"It has been a spectacular end to the season," Luis Enrique said. "We won all our [five] final games to win the La Liga trophy. And this was a difficult final for us, many minutes with a player less against a good side.

"This team is made of up of champions, who can compete despite all the difficulties they have faced over the campaign, and we are very happy for our fans who have come here with us at the end of a great season."

Luis Enrique said his attack-minded side had shown another side of their game when forced to dig in and defend when playing almost an hour with a man less.

"This team cannot show more character or personality," he said. "We had to defend and the team did that great -- they all gave a little bit more. This team is made to attack, clearly, but when they had to defend, close up spaces, and counter, they knew what to do.

"We improved a lot defensively at the end of the season - and went many minutes [all last six games] without conceding. What we talked about and worked on towards the end of the La Liga season helped us with one player less against Sevilla. They did not create clear chances to score, which makes us very proud."

The Barcelona manager said his changes through the game, removing midfielder Ivan Rakitic at half-time to send on another defender in Jeremy Mathieu and then putting in playmaker Rafinha when striker Luis Suarez got injured in the 57th minute, had worked well.

"You usually think about what might happen in a game, but this time we had not really considered this possibility," he said. "There was not long left in the first half, so we put [Sergio] Busquets back in defence. At half-time we had to think about what to do, who to take off.

"It was the game with most decisions to make over the whole season. We were relaxed, the team responded, and the changes worked well, both Jeremy and Rafa."

The Asturian denied that his team had needed to prove anything to anyone, coming from a dip in form in April which saw them exit the Champions League and end their chances of repeating last year's 'Treble' success.

"This team does not need to show anything. They have won many trophies over the years with different coaches," Luis Enrique said. "They have a very high level in terms of quality and commitment. We came through a series of moments, were forced to give our best in the final stage of La Liga, and the same in the Copa del Rey."

Barca did win the Treble including the Champions League during Luis Enrique's first year as coach in 2014-15, but he said that season had been the harder of his two in charge.

"This year has been easier than the first year," he said. "The first year is always special. The players must get used to your way of talking, planning for games. There are many things that are more difficult the first year.

"This year it has been more relaxed. We had the challenge that no other team had, to win everything, we could not manage it as this is a difficult sport, but what the players have given I cannot complain about."

The European Supercup and World Club Cup victories meant his team had won four of six competitions entered this season, Luis Enrique reminded everyone.

"We finished last year with three, we have four now," he said. "Of six we have won four. The balance can only be positive on an individual level, and collectively."

Luis Enrique confirmed that Suarez had picked up a muscle problem before leaving the pitch early in the second half, but did not say how serious the issue was.

"Suarez is injured, unfortunately, it is a muscle problem," he said. "We are not able to say how bad it is yet."
