Suarez helps Barcelona advance to Copa del Rey semis; Celta stun Atleti

Holders Barcelona advanced to the Copa del Rey semifinals with a 3-1 defeat (5-2 aggregate) of Athletic Bilbao in their second leg quarterfinal tie at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Inaki Williams opened the scoring in the 12th minute for the visitors, who carried a 2-1 deficit into Catalonia. The Bilbao striker collected a defence-splitting through ball from Aritz Aduriz before rounding Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and poking the ball into an empty net.

Barcelona quickly hit back after the break through Luis Suarez, who steered home a Lionel Messi cross after a fine move down the left side started by Sergio Roberto's chipped pass into Messi's path.

Gerrard Pique added Barca's second nine minutes from time, rising above a Bilbao defender to steer an inviting Daniel Alves cross into the roof of Iago Herrerin's net.

Neymar then capped the scoring in second-half stoppage time with a lashed, left-footed shot into Herrerin's top left corner from just inside the top of the box.

In Wednesday's other game, Pablo Hernandez netted a brace as Celta Vigo stunned Atletico Madrid 3-2 to advance on aggregate by the same scoreline at the Vicente Calderon.

Hernandez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a finely-placed header into Miguel Angel Moya's far corner, before Antoine Griezman levelled seven minutes later.

The score remained level at half-time, before Celta took the advantage nine minutes in through a superb, dipping John Guidetti strike from 30 yards out.

Not content with the goal lead, Celta grabbed another eight minutes later, with Hernandez nearly duplicating his header in the first half.

Angel Correa gave the visitors some nervy moments nine minutes from time, turning and beating two defenders at the top of the box before toe-poking past Ruben Blanco in the Celta net.

However the damage had already been done, and it was the visitors celebrating their advancement to the semis at the final whistle.
