Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao at San Mames; Atletico and Celta draw

Holders Barcelona took charge of their Copa del Rey quarterfinal with a 2-1 first-leg victory at Athletic Bilbao.

Even without Lionel Messi or Luis Suarez Barcelona were still able to control proceedings, Neymar and Munir El Haddadi handing the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Aduriz Zubeldia grabbed an 89th-minute goal for Athletic, however, to keep the tie alive ahead of the second leg at the Camp Nou.

Atletico Madrid couldn't break through at Estadio Balaidos.

In Wednesday's second game, Atletico Madrid and Celta Vigo played out a 0-0 draw at Estadio Balaidos.

The teams will meet again in next week's second leg in Madrid, where Atletico has won their last nine matches.

Atletico relied on solid defending to keep the hosts from scoring, but Diego Simeone's team failed to take their chances on counterattacks.

The sides had met in the Spanish league just 10 days ago, with Atletico winning 2-0 in Vigo.

Press Association and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
