Barcelona cruise in Copa del Rey
Barcelona have one foot in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey after cruising to a 4-1 victory over Cartagena in the first-leg of their round of 32 clash.
Playing at home, Cartagena, who currently occupy one of the promotion play-off spots in Segunda B, took a shock 16th minute lead through Fernando before Barcelona pushed ahead before half-time with strikes to Pedro and Cesc Fabregas.
And the reigning Spanish champions took control of the tie as Pedro completed his brace and young striker Jean Marie Dongou scored his first goal of the season.
Real Betis also secured a first-leg win as they claimed a 2-1 advantage away to Lleida Esportiu.
The third division side were immeadately in trouble against Betis with goalkeeper Pau Torres shown a straight red card in the 5th minute.
And Betis compounded their opponents’ misery as Joan Verdu and Jorge Molina gave the away side a two-goal advantage before the half-time break.
But Lleida Esportiu still hold hope for an upset in the tie after Pere Milla scored in the 57th minute.
Sevilla were another La Liga winner as they survived a Coke send-off to secure a 1-0 away win over Racing Santander.
Jairo Samperio scored the only goal of the game, but Sevilla were forced to play for most of the second-half as defender Coke picked up two yellow cards in the 52nd minute.
In an all La Liga affair, Villarreal scored a late equaliser to earn a 2-2 draw against Elche.
The home side went ahead through Giovani Dos Santos, but Elche hit back with goals to Sergio Pelegrin and Richmond Boakye.
But the teams will head into the second-leg locked at 2-2 as midfielder Javier Aquino scored in the fourth minute of added-on time at the end of the match.
