Spain football federation sets presidential election date for April

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has said its presidential election will take place on April 9.

Former Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) president Luis Rubiales is the only official candidate for the post so far.

However, Juan Luis Larrea -- who took over as acting chief last summer when Angel Maria Villar was banned for a year by the National Sports Council (CSD), Spain's highest sporting authority, after being arrested in an anti-corruption investigation -- is expected to run.

An RFEF statement said: "As stated by article 44.8 of the RFEF statutes, the management committee of the RFEF has agreed to call for its presidential elections on April 9, 2018."

Villar is currently on bail awaiting trial on charges of improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents.

He had been re-elected president for an eighth term in May, but that was annulled following a request from the CSD.

Candidates have until March 9 to declare their intention to run, but 68-year-old Villar will not be in contention.
