Spain legend Xavi surprised by Vicente del Bosque's Iker Casillas remarks

Former Spain star Xavi has said he was surprised coach Vicente del Bosque revealed goalkeeper Iker Casillas was unhappy at Euro 2016.

Defending champions Spain went out 2-0 to Italy in the round of 16, and Del Bosque said Casillas "was not good with the coaches" after being told he would be deputy to Manchester United's David De Gea.

Xavi told Cuatro in quotes reported by Football Espana: "I spoke to Iker and I'm convinced that they will patch things up, although I was surprised the coach went public.

"They're two excellent people, and they have got on very well for all these years.

"I spoke to Iker before Del Bosque's statements. He's calm, and he's feeling fine."

Casillas had been Spain's first-choice goalkeeper at every tournament since Euro 2000, making 167 appearances and winning Euro 2008 and 2012 as well as the World Cup in 2010.

But he was the target of criticism as the team crashed out of the 2014 World Cup at the group stage.

Del Bosque chose De Gea, 25, as his main goalkeeper at the Euros and told radio show El Larguero: "For sure, Casillas is hurting with me. I understand it.

"With his teammates and colleagues he was perfect -- with the coaching team, so-so. The only one who I have not sent a message [after tournament] to is Casillas; he was not good with the coaches. He did not speak to me either.

"It leaves a bad taste that with us, with [assistant coach] Toni [Grande], with [fitness coach Javier] Minano, with me, he was not the same as with his teammates."

Del Bosque said he would step down as Spain coach after the Italy defeat, but no formal decision has been announced.
