Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque hails 'prestige result' against England

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque said his team had achieved a "prestige result" after Friday night's 2-0 friendly win against England in Alicante.

Second half goals from Villarreal right-back Mario Gaspart and Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla saw the reigning European champions ease to victory in a game against a very youthful looking English XI.

The veteran La Roja boss told his post-game news conference at the Estadio Jose Rico Perez that he was satisfied with the performance and win against a very strong England side.

"This is a prestige result of course, against a very strong team," Del Bosque said. "Every time they had the ball in midfield there was danger. We were good in defence, tight at the back, attentive to second balls, but they are a great team. There were some good things, we had a bit of luck, although we pushed more than England."

Spain started the game with an atypical 4-4-2 shape with both Diego Costa and Paco Alcacer in attack, but both centre-forwards were withdrawn, including the out-of-form looking Chelsea leaving the play on 63 minutes without having had one shot on target.

"Diego Costa was at the level of the team, one other player," Del Bosque said. "He worked well, playing deep, were up against a very strong side in defence, like England. Costa is one of our players now, there is nothing else. It does not depend too much on the system, with the players we have, we have our own style."

Substitute Nolito added some attacking impetus when entering at half-time, while Villarreal right-back Mario, 24, has now scored in both his two senior international caps. Del Bosque said he was content with how both new boys were settling with the team.

"We are happy with both of them," he said. "They played very well, both in last game away from home, and today they did what we wanted. Mario gets forward well, has done in both games now."

It was too early yet to know the extent of a knee injury which saw Bayern Munich playmaker Thiago Alcantara leave the pitch midway through the first half, Del Bosque said.

"Thiago, we do not know yet, he was taken off for precaution with a knee problem," he said. "There will be tests tomorrow to see how he is."

The game brought a 100th clean sheet for long serving goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who has been on the winning side on 120 times in his 165 caps. Del Bosque praised national captain Casillas, while saying that Manchester United's David De Gea would come in to start Tuesday's friendly in Belgium.

"We must be very proud of the top sportspeople we have, and Casillas is one of the first of them," he said. "It is important for us to have a player at this level, with a fantastic career. He helps give strength to the younger players. De Gea will play in Brussels."

Del Bosque said he would rotate his squad on Tuesday to give those players who did not feature against England some playing time.

"Our idea is to give everyone a chance," he said "I cannot say for sure yet, but we think it better to give everyone a chance. So we will use different players on Tuesday to help strengthen the team and look for different alternatives."
