David De Gea focused on Spain after Man United, Real Madrid transfer fail

David de Gea helped Spain move closer to a spot in Euro 2016 on Tuesday by keeping a clean sheet against Group C opponent Macedonia.

Afterwards, the Spanish goalkeeper spoke for the first time since his failed transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

After Spain's 1-0 win, De Gea, who started and played the entire match, told Spanish outlet AS, "I'm happy for the win and I was looking forward to playing. I've felt well (playing from the start).

"Now we need to continue to work and let's see if I'm also lucky in my club."

De Gea has not played at United since a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain on July 29, with coach Louis van Gaal instead relying on summer signing Sergio Romero of Argentina in goal.

But De Gea, who is under contract with United until next summer, has been included in the Red Devils' Champions League squad. For now, he is only thinking about Spain.

"We knew that they [Macedonia] were going to complicate our lives and it has been the case, especially playing in their stadium," De Gea said. "Juan (Mata) scored a good goal and we have taken three points that are very important."

Mata's goal was deflected by Macedonia goalkeeper Tome Pacovski into his own net and lifted Spain two points clear of Slovakia at the top of Group C with two qualifying games remaining.

De Gea has been through a difficult couple of weeks, but says his Spain teammates have helped him cope with the situation.

"The support that I have received has been very important," he said. "I have magnificent teammates and I'm very grateful to all of them.

"My future is going to be the same as it is now. I'm calm, will continue to work and improve. In conclusion, enjoying football. I'm happy."
