Vicente Del Bosque: Spain fans' jeering of Gerard Pique is 'disgraceful'

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has backed Gerard Pique after the Barcelona defender was again whistled while playing for the national team on home soil.

Pique, 28, was jeered throughout Saturday's 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Slovakia at the Carlos Tartiere stadium in Oviedo.

Some fans disapprove of his support for a referendum on Catalan independence and want him excluded from the Spain team on those grounds.

Del Bosque hit out at the treatment he has received, telling radio station Cadena Cope: "This does not benefit us. He wants the national team to work well, and he has my esteem."

AS, meanwhile, quoted the coach as saying: "It is unpleasant. I find it disgraceful that a player of the national team is being booed, and I hope this doesn't happen again."

Former Barcelona forward Pedro said he believed Pique was dealing with the hostility well, adding: "The truth is I don't believe the situation is affecting him. Against Slovakia he played a very good game."

But Pique's current Barca teammate Jordi Alba said Pique's treatment "doesn't seem right."

He added: "He's a national team player who has always shown commitment.

"He has always said that he feels deeply about what it means to wear the Spain shirt, and he's always given everything.

"There are always going to be different opinions but I don't like it at all -- I don't want to see a teammate whistled."

On Monday, AS reported that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) was considering changing the venue for a potential November friendly against England from Real Madrid's Bernabeu amid concerns about the reception Pique could receive.

And later in the day, the RFEF confirmed that the match -- which will only take place if Spain qualify directly for Euro 2016 -- will be played in Alicante.

In June, Pique was booed and whistled by the crowd in Leon during Spain's friendly win over Costa Rica. Before that game, he had angered Madrid fans by making a jibe about Cristiano Ronaldo.
