Diego Costa lacking luck in front of goal for Spain - Pedro Rodriguez

Pedro Rodriguez has backed Chelsea teammate Diego Costa to find his goal-scoring touch with Spain and to become a key player for the national team.

Costa, 26, has made eight appearances for La Roja since making his Spain debut in March 2014 but the Brazil-born forward has only found the back of the net once.

The striker, who scored 20 league goals in 26 league appearances to help Chelsea win the Premier League title last season, started in Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Slovakia in a Euro 2016 qualifying game but did not find the target.

Costa did, however, earn Spain a penalty which Andres Iniesta converted.

"I think Diego Costa is doing a good job in the national team," Pedro said to Spanish sports newspaper AS. "The only question mark is that he is not having much luck in front of goal.

"But he creates lots of spaces for the team, he gives us a lot of solutions and the goals will come."

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque is expected to include Costa in his starting XI for Tuesday's Euro 2016 Group C qualifier away to Macedonia.

When asked about Costa, Del Bosque told radio station Cadena Ser: "I believe that in the teams he has played, he has been very useful and we hope that he will also be useful to us."

Another Chelsea player that is expected to start for Spain is Cesc Fabregas.

The 28-year-old has earned a starting place in Del Bosque's side following Xavi Hernandez's retirement from international duty last summer.

For the first time since coach Del Bosque took over the national team in 2008, Fabregas has started in four consecutive games for Spain and played in the heart of midfield.

"The important thing is to play but I've always said that I felt more comfortable in this position," Fabregas said in Spanish sports newspaper Marca. "I like to hear that this is Cesc's Spain or that I'm Xavi's successor.

"Whatever helps me to play, and more so in my preferred position, I'm happy with."

Spain reaped the rewards in their win over Slovakia with 82 of Fabregas' passes successful -- the midfielder is set to earn his 99th cap on Tuesday.

Spain top Group C and are level on 18 points with second-place Slovakia with three games remaining.

After Tuesday's match, they take on Luxembourg in Logrono on Oct. 9 before ending their qualifying campaign in Kiev three days later against Ukraine.
