Spain squad: Juan Mata and Diego Costa return for Euro 2016 qualifiers

Juan Mata and Diego Costa are back in the Spain national squad for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia.

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is also included, despite not having played a minute of competitive football so far this season amid ongoing transfer speculation.

United midfielder Mata had not been called up by coach Vicente Del Bosque since Spain's failure at the World Cup, while Costa's fitness problems last season meant he had dropped out of the squad more than once.

Chelsea's new signing Pedro Rodriguez is on the 23-man list, but Juventus centre-forward Alvaro Morata misses out through injury.

Del Bosque told a news conference that he hoped speculation surrounding a potential move to Real Madrid for De Gea would subside by the time the international games came around.

"As in the case of some others on the list, it is true that he has not played any official games that are required," Del Bosque said.

"But he is fit, training and ready to play. It does not mean anything that he does not play [for United]. I hope that his situation is temporary and that, by Sept. 1, it is cleared up. He is the keeper who, together with [Iker] Casillas, we believe will defend the Spain goal for many years."

The coach said Mata's early-season form had swung his selection ahead of Man City's Jesus Navas, explaining: "We always have doubts over whether to bring some players or others.

"He [Mata] had not been coming lately, and at Manchester United he was not an automatic pick. But now he is doing well and returns."

He said Costa was "playing well and we have a lot of confidence in him," and added that Bayern Munich playmaker Thiago Alcantara, although missing out this time, "is our future."

Reigning European champions Spain are second in Group C, having been beaten by leaders Slovakia in November.

Although the Slovaks will be missing a number of important players including suspended Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel for the reverse fixture in Oviedo on Sept 5, Del Bosque said his team would have to play well to get the points needed to go joint top.

"They have not slipped up, they get back well, they have a good counter-attack with fast players," he said.

"They are missing four important players, but the most important thing is we know how to attack them and stop their powerful counters."
