Spain beat Russia in European Under-19 Championship final

Borja Mayoral celebrates giving Spain the lead over Russia.

Spain won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship with a 2-0 victory over Russia in Sunday's final in Katerini, Greece.

Spain deservedly broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Real Madrid Castilla forward Borja Mayoral's header.

They then sealed the victory through substitute Matias Nahuel, of Villarreal, in the 78th minute after fine work from Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio.

Spain, who had been beaten 3-1 by Russia in the group stage, held on to secure victory in the tournament for the seventh time in 14 years.

Spain U19 boss Luis de la Fuente told reporters: "We are humble people, who learn from mistakes. We knew we had to correct things to overcome Russia and, moreover, the improvement in terms of physical condition was going to happen. All of that combined with the great talent and quality of these players has made it possible for us to now enjoy this success.

"It is a well-earned reward for many years' hard work. I have never lost faith. The health of Spanish football is enviable."

He added: "Now the truly hard part begins in their professional careers but I've told them that this has changed their lives. From now on, the demands are going to be a lot more. They have taken an important step forwards but it's only a step at the end of the day. Now they have to keep working with the same humility because the challenges are going to be more difficult for them."
