Gerard Pique jeered during Spain's friendly win over Costa Rica

Gerard Pique is refusing to let the whistles of supporters get to him after he was jeered during Spain's 2-1 win over Costa Rica in Leon on Thursday.

Pique has come under fire for mocking Real Madrid during the Barcelona's Champions League victory celebrations at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

The defender joked to partying fans that he wanted to thank "Kevin Roldan," adding: "It all started with you!" This was a reference to Roldan having performed at Cristiano Ronaldo's 30th birthday party in January and later publishing social media photos that were not well received by Madrid fans and pundits as their team had been beaten 4-0 by Atletico Madrid earlier that day.

He was jeered during Thursday afternoon's training session, and barracked when he replaced Sergio Ramos in the 58th minute of the Costa Rica game. His every touch of the ball was then met with whistles, but he won't let that get to him as Spain prepare for Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Belarus.

"Everyone can express themselves freely. One day they whistle, one day they applaud," Pique said.

"It has gone on for years, it doesn't bother me. This is my job. For me, coming to the national team is like coming home. I have a lot of caps and, every time they call me, I'll come."

Earlier on Thursday, coach Vicente del Bosque had defended the 28-year-old after he was targeted during training.

"There wasn't actually that much whistling during the session but what worries me more is the way the press has been inciting problems and that does disgust me," he was quoted as saying by AS. "I think that, if you whistle a Spanish player, you are effectively whistling the national team.

"Let's not forget that most of these lads have represented their country 70 times at least, they have come up through the youth teams and have always behaved correctly; it's not right to whistle them.

"We could only hear faint whistles from the practice pitch. It was the same old story, every time he touched the ball they started up... But having said that, we have been working for the past eight days and apart from yesterday, their behaviour has been magnificent."
