Sofiane Boufal: Southampton winner against Sunderland 'for everyone'

Sofiane Boufal has said he wants to make up for lost time after a stunning home debut for Southampton.

Boufal, Saints' record £21 million summer signing, was out injured for the first two months of the season.

But the Moroccan winger marked his belated full debut with a fine goal as Claude Puel's side beat Sunderland 1-0 to reach the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup.

He brought a long ball under control with one touch before beating full-back Billy Jones and curling home an unstoppable shot.

"It was a beautiful goal and I'm so happy to score my first goal at St Mary's," Boufal told the club's official website.

"I want to say thank you for the support of all the fans who came. I'm so happy to play 90 minutes as it's good for the confidence and for my body. It was a great night for me.

"I'd like to say thank you to my teammates and to all the medical staff. The goal isn't just for me, it's for everyone."
