Southampton boss Claude Puel laments disallowed goal, penalty in loss

Southampton boss Claude Puel was in taciturn mood after his side's 2-0 loss to Manchester United and was guarded in his views on the game's key passage.

Two goals from star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic made the difference on the day, the second of which come from the penalty spot after Luke Shaw was judged to have been taken down in the box early in the second half.

Shortly before Shaw won what was a disputed penalty from Jordy Clasie, however, Dusan Tadic had seen a headed effort ruled out by the officials.

Had that have been allowed, and the penalty not followed, the outcome might have been very different at Old Trafford.

"The penalty allowed United to play better, after that it was difficult and it is a pity of course,'' Puel said.

"I don't know [if it was a penalty], I don't see the situation. It is just difficult to accept this goal at the start of the second half.''

Striker Shane Long added: "The penalty was a bit of sucker punch for us so soon after half-time. Even afterwards we still caused some problems, but at the moment it's hard to look at any positives from the performance.''
