Southampton boss Ronald Koeman plays down Everton links

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has cooled speculation linking him with Everton and indicated that he is currently planning to see out his contract.

Koeman, who has one year remaining on his deal at St Mary's, has been touted as a potential replacement for Roberto Martinez, who was dismissed this week, along with fellow Dutchman Frank de Boer.

Asked at his news conference on Friday about widespread reports he is a target for Everton, Koeman replied: "I did not expect this question ... I was surprised."

He said he knew nothing about the speculation and added: "I am manager of Southampton.

"I mentioned last week, and everybody knows, I have one more year more contract.

"What I mentioned last week, because I got the same question about my future, [is] that we will sit together and we will analyse this season and talk about the future. That's what the news is."

Asked whether he plans to see out his deal, he replied: "Yes."

Southampton remain in contention to qualify for next season's Europa League and conclude their season with a game at home to FA Cup finalists Crystal Palace, who are expected to rest players.

Koeman said qualifying for Europe would be "a great, big achievement."

However, he added: "It's not [the time] to be happy now -- it's 'do your job on Sunday,' and we know it's a difficult game.

"Of course maybe they will do some changes in the team because they play in one week the final of the FA Cup, but we expect a strong team."

Koeman also said midfielder Jordie Clasie, who suffered an injury in last weekend's 2-1 win over Tottenham, is set to be the only absentee for the game.
