Southampton, Ireland striker Shane Long out 2-4 weeks with ankle injury

Southampton and Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long will be sidelined for up to four weeks after suffering an ankle ligament injury on international duty.

Saints manager Ronald Koeman on Thursday confirmed the status of Long's injury he suffered while playing for Ireland against Poland on Sunday.

He now faces a race to be fit for Ireland's Euro 2016 playoff in November. The draw is set for Sunday, with the two-legged ties scheduled from Nov. 12-17.

"The Shane injury is a disappointment. It's an ankle ligament injury and he will be out for two to four weeks," Koeman said. "That's a disappointment, but the rest of the players are happy to be back."

Koeman said midfielder Jordy Clasie could play against Leicester City this weekend for his Premier League debut.

"It makes more possibilities for the manager," Koeman said. "Sometimes it's more difficult because you have to make decisions. The first decision is on the first 11, then the substitutes.

"Little by little we have to make big decisions to leave people out of the 18 on the list for the game. Jordy is back and he had 60 minutes in a friendly against Ajax.

"He's really back on his level and can be important from Saturday onwards."

Koeman said he was happy to have all his players back from international duty in time to have two full days of training before Saturday's game.

"We have the experience from last year that we have every international duty 14, 15 or 16 players out," Koeman added. "You know when they come back it is a small preparation for the game on Saturday, but they are back and they know what we like to do.

"We have two training sessions to prepare for the game against Leicester and that's no problem."
