Southampton earn spot in Europa League with Arsenal's FA Cup win

Southampton secured a spot in the Europa League for next season when Arsenal defeated Aston Villa in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The Saints' seventh-placed finish in the Premier League this season will be good enough for Europe after both English cup competitions went to teams who qualified for the Champions League.

Southampton will play in Europe for the first time since 2003 -- when they lost to Arsenal in the FA Cup final -- and only the second time in 30 years.

Their reward will be an extra early start for the season as the third qualifying round begins on July 30. The draw is set to take place on July 17.

Should Southampton advance another playoff round awaits in August shortly after the beginning of the Premier League seasons.

With West Ham qualifying through their Fair Play ranking, England will have eight teams in Europe next year for the first time since 2011-12 -- Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United in the Champions League and Tottenham, Liverpool, Southampton and the Hammers in the Europa League.
