South Korea coach Hong resigns

Hong Myung-Bo's South Korea earned one point in Group H at the World Cup in Brazil.

South Korea coach Hong Myung-Bo resigned on Thursday after apologising for the Taeguk Warriors' meek performance in Brazil.

- Duerden: Hong's resignation inevitable

Hong had offered his resignation a week ago, but South Korea federation vice president Huh Jung-Moo said that the organization had asked him to lead the country at the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia.

That arrangement is now over and South Korea will look to replace Hong, who was South Korea's most-capped player with 135 appearances.

As a coach, he led the country's under-23 team to the bronze medal at the London Olympics.

Hong told a televised news conference on Thursday that he feels "deeply sorry" for disappointing South Korean fans.

"We talked about giving hopes to our people. But we eventually failed to give hopes and only gave disappointment," Hong said. "I'm leaving from the post today."

Hong said he first thought about quitting after his team's loss to Algeria.

South Korea finished at the bottom of Group H with just one point from three matches, earning a draw against Russia but losing to Algeria and Belgium.
