Cape Town City thump Black Leopards to move into top eight

Cape Town City moved into the top eight of the Absa Premiership with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Black Leopards at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Ayanda Patosi, Allan Kateregga and Siphelele Mthembu sealed the win for Benni McCarthy's side, who have now recorded back-to-back wins after a difficult start to their league campaign.

It was City's intricate passing on the edge of the Leopards box that drew reward as they cut open the visitors almost at will, especially in the first half.

They gave an early warning of their prowess when Leopards goalkeeper King Ndlovu was forced to make a point-blank save to deny Mthembu from Patosi's cross, while Kateregga put the rebound wide.

But City had the lead on 10 minutes when Surprise Ralani went on a mazey run that beat three defenders and his pass was dummied by Mthembu into the path of Patosi. The attacking midfielder blasted the ball home from 12-yards.

Patosi then missed a magnificent chance to double his side's lead when he scuffed a shot with the goal at his mercy.

There was double frustration as Leopards then went up the field to score the equaliser.

Ralani's poor pass was picked up by Karabo Tshepe and his long ball saw Musonda get behind the City defence. The Zambian was able to easily round City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh and score.

Ralani forced a good save from Ndlovu from a tight angle but Patosi put his header wide from the follow-up as another opportunity was spurned.

City did get their second goal on 39 minutes and it was exquisitely worked. Ralani and Thabo Nodada showed some excellent one-touch football in the build-up before Uganda international Kateregga had the simplest of finishes.

Leopards might have levelled when Musonda forced a good save from Leeuwenburgh, while Munyai put the follow-up wide with the goal gaping. But City got their insurance goal when Leopards failed to clear a corner and Roland Putsche headed the ball into the path of Mthembu, who beat the player on the line.

In the other game on Sunday, bottom side AmaZulu and Polokwane City played to a 0-0 draw in Durban. The best chance of the game fell to AmaZulu's Ovidy Karuru, who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the Zimbabwe international could not beat the stopper.
