The movement of players directly between Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates has been something of a rarity over the last five decades, though Brilliant Khuzwayo added to that list when he joined the Buccaneers yesterday.
Khuzwayo, who had spent the last six seasons mostly on the bench at Naturena behind first-choice Itumeleng Khune, was one of nine new signings unveiled by Pirates.
KweséESPN looks back at five other moves between the clubs that caused a stir in local football.
LEHLOHONOLO MAJORO
The most recent move between Chiefs and Pirates was the switch made by Majoro in January 2014. The striker was primed for an exit from Chiefs and looked certain to SuperSport United, before the Buccaneers swooped in late to secure his signature. So late in fact, that SuperSport had already announced on their website that he had signed .... However, things did not work out well for Majoro at Pirates as he managed just nine league goals in two-and-a-half seasons before leaving for Cape Town City in July 2016. He has since joined Bidvest Wits this past January.
KAIZER MOTAUNG
The original 'move' between the clubs and one orchestrated by Motaung himself as the Pirates superstar left Pirates to create what would become Kaizer Chiefs in the late 1960s. Motaung was a key player at Pirates and at the time was also featuring in the North American Soccer League, most notably with the Atlanta Chiefs. He returned from one such spell with the idea to start his own team, and along with others formed a breakaway that would create the great Soweto rivalry we have today. Motaung is still the chairman at Chiefs as the club closes in on its 50-year anniversary.
DUMISA NGOBE
Tough-tackling midfielder Ngobe would have a stellar, trophy-laden career with Pirates before a move to Turkey, and was also a fine performer for Bafana Bafana in the late 1990s. But it is forgotten by many that he started out at Chiefs, and was involved in a nasty tug-of-war for his services between the two clubs. He played for Chiefs in the 1995 BP Top Eight Final that ended in defeat to Wits University, but when Pirates came in to offer him a contract, he moved over to The Buccaneers.
GERT SCHALKWYK
Schalkwyk was a supremely talented midfielder who never quite lived up to his enormous potential. He debuted in the PSL at Wits in 2002/03 and after two seasons moved to Chiefs. There he spent the next five seasons in, but mostly out, of the team, and after a brief loan spell at Bloemfontein Celtic, moved to Pirates. Unfortunately for him it would be more of the same as he battled for game-time at Bucs, eventually moving on loan to Maritzburg United and then permanently to Golden Arrows and Santos, where his career fizzled out.
JIMMY TAU
Aside from the Motaung story, this was probably the most controversial of the switches between clubs, with former Pirates stalwart Tau taking up residence at Chiefs. The fullback made his Pirates debut in the 2002/03 season and was an instant regular for the club, excelling over the next three seasons. Tau had refused to sign a new contract at Pirates at the end of his deal, before moving over to their bitter rivals. He later stated it was the proudest moment of his career to join Chiefs, which rubbed salt into the wounds of furious Pirates fans.
