Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns win to maintain PSL title challenge

Front runners Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns both picked up wins in the Absa Premiership on Sunday, defeating Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates respectively to maintain their title challenge.

Wits have 57 points from 27 games, while Sundowns are three points behind having played the same number of matches.

The only other side in mathematical contention are Cape Town City, who have 52 points.

In the other game on Sunday, Platinum Stars all-but secured their top-flight status for another season with victory over bottom side Highlands Park, who slip closer to an immediate return to the National First Division.

Goals from Khama Billiat and Yannick Zakri in either half eased Sundowns to a 2-0 win over Pirates, in doing so putting a dent in the top eight hopes of The Buccaneers.

Billiat scored a rare headed goal as Sundowns dominated the play, while Zakri provided a neat finish after a rampaging run into the box three minutes after halftime.

The victory is a first in three matches for Sundowns, who had taken just a single point from their previous two games after a rare slump in form to hand their rivals the advantage in the title race.

Wits had the lion's share of chances in their slender 1-0 win over Maritzburg United, and coach Gavin Hunt will be delighted to get a win against a tricky opponent.

Mogakolodi Ngele should have put Wits ahead in the first half when he found himself with just the goalkeeper to beat only to fire wide, but the home side did eventually break the deadlock when Phumlani Ntshangase headed home a freekick on 56 minutes.

Ntshangase's effort, only the third goal of his career, was his first in over a year, but could prove vital as the Clever Boys take a step closer to the title.

Robert Ng'ambi grabbed a winner three minutes from time to help Stars defeat Highlands Park having been frustrated for much of the game by the visitors.

Stars move to 30 points, just two behind Ajax Cape Town in eighth, while Highlands stay bottom of the division on 22 points, although they're just one off Free State Stars and safety.
