Bidvest Wits have opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Absa Premiership standings following a 1-0 win against faltering Orlando Pirates on Thursday evening.

The only goal of the game came 10 minutes after the restart - Cuthbert Malajila slotting home past Siyabonga Mpontshane from close range.

Wits dominated for most of the game but Pirates - who are heading for their worst points tally in a season - were not without their chances; Thabo Rakhale coming closest when he forced Moeneeb Josephs into a smart save just after the goal.

The Buccaneers remain eighth while Wits move to 54 points - three better than Mamelodi Sundowns, who could only manage a 2-2 home draw against Platinum Stars in the earlier game.

It started well enough for the defending champions when Thabo Nthethe blasted home a sixth-minute corner-kick, but Dikwena were level shortly afterwards when Ndumiso Mabena beat Denis Onyango at the near-post.

The same player beat the same goalie at the near-post again soon after the break, but Yannick Zakri got the equaliser - his first in the PSL - on 63 minutes to earn Sundowns a point, though it could have been more as Anthony Laffor and Percy Tau came close late on.
