Former South Africa international John 'Shoes' Moshoeu dies

JOHANNESBURG -- The South African Football Association says former international midfielder and African Cup of Nations winner John Moshoeu has died. He was 49.

Moshoeu's agent also announced his death, saying he died in a Johannesburg hospital on Tuesday after "a long but brave battle" with cancer.

Nicknamed "Shoes" because of his dribbling ability, Moshoeu scored four goals for South Africa in its victorious 1996 African Cup campaign. He was also part of the 1998 World Cup squad and played 73 times for his country between 1993 and 2004.

Born in Soweto, Moshoeu had two spells at South African club giant Kaizer Chiefs and played for four clubs in Turkey. He was playing semi-professionally as recently as last year.

SAFA said federation president Danny Jordaan visited Moshoeu in hospital on Monday night.
