40-year-old Nomvethe helps AmaZulu to precious victory

Veteran forward Siyabonga Nomvethe scoredl just five days short of his 41st birthday to hand bottom side AmaZulu a 2-1 success over Highlands Park in their Absa Premiership clash at the Makhulong Stadium on Tuesday.

There was also a win for Cape Town City as they pushed into the top eight with a win at Polokwane City, while Maritzburg United were held to yet another home goalless draw by Chippa United.

Nomvethe, a first-half substitute for Sbusiso Mabiliso and making just a second appearance for the side since August, swept home a shot early in the second period with a typically clinical finish.

He becomes the second oldest scorer in South Africa's Premier Soccer League after another former AmaZulu player, the late John Moshoeu, who was 12 days shy of his 42nd birthday when he netted against Kaizer Chiefs in December 2007.

Nomvethe will not be able to beat that mark though as he has already announced that this season will be the last of his professional career.

Highlands Park equalized through winger Lindokuhle Mbatha, but Argentina forward Emeliano Tade was able to seal the win after Bongi Ntuli's fine run into the box.

The victory takes Usuthu to within three points after Chippa in 12th position as they recover from the disappointment of being docked six points by FIFA for an unpaid salary to a former player.

Cape Town City leapt into the top half with aa deserved 2-1 success at 10-man Polokwane City as Ayanda Patosi continued his fine form with an early strike to put them ahead.

Siphelele Mthembu knocked home a rebound to double the advantage on the hour-mark, after which the home side lost influential skipper Jabu Maluleke to a second yellow card.

They did pull one back from the penalty-spot though as Ghana forward Mohammed Anas stroked home the spot-kick.

Benni McCarthy's side are now seven points behind leaders Orlando Pirates, but have two games in hand.

Maritzburg's inability to score in front of their own fans continued as they played to a fourth 0-0 league draw in six games, a run that also includes a 2-0 loss to Lamontville Golden Arrows.

The only match in which they found the back of the net was a 2-2 draw with Highlands Park and they remain winless in the league at home since March.
