SuperSport United take aim at PSL league title

Just days after the disappointment of missing out on the CAF Confederation Cup, SuperSport United coach Eric Tinkler has made it clear the club have now set their sights on South Africa's Premier Soccer League title.

They have much catching up to do, having had a swathe of fixtures postponed while they advanced to the final of the continental club competition, starting on Wednesday at home to Ajax Cape Town.

"For the game we plan to make quite a few changes because we have brought in quite a few new faces to the squad and I think, quite frankly, we do need to refresh the squad a little bit and now we can really start focusing on the league campaign.

"That now becomes the main objective," said Tinkler, whose side last played a league game on October 31 when they beat Golden Arrows 3-0.

SuperSport were held to a goalless draw at home in the second leg of the final on Sunday by holders TP Mazembe to be beaten 2-1 on aggregate.

Players not involved in the Confederation Cup like Sifiso Myeni, the Ghanaian Richard Boateng, Zimbabwe striker Prince Dube and giant Nigerian centre-back Azubuike Egwuekwe, who is yet to make his debut despite being signed three months ago, now get a chance to play after a month kicking their heels on the sidelines.

"Obviously I'm looking for a positive response and I'll find that out on Wednesday when we play against Ajax Cape Town. Then you will know how the loss to Mazembe has affected the team, both emotionally and psychologically," said Tinkler.

"But we've got to put it behind us and focus on our next objective, which is the league."

Wednesday's match in Atteridgeville is only the sixth league game of the season for SuperSport, while other teams have already played double that number.

They have 10 points already and a home win over struggling Ajax would elevate them up to mid-table.
