Kaizer Chiefs get home draw in Telkom Knockout

Kaizer Chiefs have received a home draw in the first round of the Telkom Knockout after they were paired with AmaZulu, as coach Steve Komphela begins his latest quest for silverware.

AmaZulu returned to the Premier League this season after purchasing the status of promoted Thanda Royal Zulu and have made a good start to the new campaign.

They will present a challenge for Chiefs, whose form has been inconsistent as their wait for silverware passes the two-year mark, an unprecedented barren run for the side.

Orlando Pirates must travel to Lamontville Golden Arrows, a team against whom they've enjoyed consistent success over the last few years.

Golden Arrows have been among the surprise packages of this 2017/18 campaign, and will perhaps fancy their chances of an upset win at the Orlando Stadium.

Defending champions Cape Town City have a tough away fixture at the start of their bid to retain their title when they travel to Baroka FC, although they did down the Limpopo side 4-3 in the quarterfinals last year.

Mamelodi Sundowns will be among the pre-tournament favourites, but they must also travel away as they head to Chippa United, who will be intent on making their Eastern Cape home a hostile environment for The Brazilians, who were winners of the Telkom Knockout when they beat Chiefs 3-1 in the 2015 final.

SuperSport United, who were crowned champions of the MTN8 on Saturday, are also away and must travel to Bloemfontein Celtic in what is another difficult first-round tie.

Bidvest Wits will host their nemesis from recent years, Free State Stars, though the fact that the game is being played in Johannesburg perhaps swings the tie in their favour.

In two other first round matches, Polokwane City host Ajax Cape Town and Maritzburg United entertain Platinum Stars.
