South Africa suspend coach Ephraim Mashaba after 'regrettable incident'

Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba will not lead South Africa in Tuesday's friendly.

South Africa have suspended coach Ephraim Mashaba for their friendly against Mozambique on Tuesday after opening disciplinary proceedings against him.

A statement from the South African Football Association (SAFA) said the decision related to an incident during Saturday's 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Senegal, but offered no further details.

"Bafana Bafana head coach Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba will not join the team on their trip to Mozambique as the association has deemed it necessary to employ disciplinary measures after a regrettable incident at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, 12 November 2016," the statement said.

"Assistant coach Owen da Gama will take charge of the team in the above-mentioned international friendly match against Mozambique on Tuesday, 15 November 2016 in Maputo.

"As is our custom in matters such as these, the association will not be making any further comments on this matter out of respect for the dignity of the head coach and the association and the legally privileged nature of such proceedings."

Mashaba had been under pressure ahead of Saturday's match -- following a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso in their opening match in Group D.

Saturday's win re-opened the door to Russia for the Bafana Bafana, and Mashaba was quoted as saying the win had saved his job.
