Jermain Defoe unlikely to leave Sunderland for Bournemouth - sources

Bournemouth are set to be priced out of a move for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, sources have told ESPN FC.

Defoe, 32, is among Bournemouth's list of potential targets as they look to bring in a new striker before the close of the transfer window on Sept. 1.

The forward enjoyed a loan spell earlier in his career at Bournemouth when as a teenager he scored 18 goals in 29 league appearances during the 2000-01 campaign.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has made a new striker his main priority after seeing his side fail to score in their opening two Premier League games and has been linked with moves for Crystal Palace's Glenn Murray and Queens Park Rangers' Charlie Austin.

Defoe's future at Sunderland has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks amid reports he has failed to settle in the North East.

The striker only joined Sunderland last January after a spell at Toronto FC and he still has three years to run on his contract at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland are reluctant to lose the former Tottenham and Portsmouth player after their poor start to the season and his price tag and wages mean any move to Bournemouth is unlikely.
