Tottenham to step up interest in Stuttgart's Timo Werner - sources

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to step up their interest in Stuttgart striker Timo Werner, sources have told ESPN FC.

Spurs have been tracking Werner for some time and they are ready to test Stuttgart's resolve to keep hold of the forward with a firm bid.

Werner, 19, is regarded as one of the best young prospects in Germany and has attracted interest from Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

After scoring 24 goals for Stuttgart's under-19 side in 2012-13, he became the first team's youngest-ever player and the youngest player to score a Bundesliga brace the following season.

Tottenham are aiming to steal a march on their rivals by trying to lure Werner to White Hart Lane.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is eager to add to his striking options, with Emmanuel Adebayor poised to join Aston Villa and Roberto Soldado also linked with a move away this summer.

Tottenham are also chasing West Bromwich Albion's Saido Berahino but fear they could be priced out of a move for the England under-21 international, with West Brom holding out for £20 million for the striker.

Werner fits the profile of the type of player Tottenham are looking for as he is a young player whose potential value could increase.
