Raheem Sterling plans to tell Liverpool he wants to leave

Raheem Sterling is set to tell Liverpool he wants to leave the club in the summer when talks between the two parties resume this week, sources have told ESPN FC.

Multiple news outlets reported on Monday night that the England forward would inform club chiefs that he sees his future away from Anfield. Those reports came after a well-placed source told ESPN FC last month that Sterling will not sign a new contract at Liverpool as he waits to see what offers come his way this summer

Sterling's agent Aidy Ward will meet Liverpool's chief executive Ian Ayre on Friday to express Sterling's desires, the reports say, and the player already told Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in person before the 1-1 draw at Chelsea on May 10 that he wanted to leave, according to the BBC.

Sterling is under contract until 2017 and, if he opts not to sign a new deal, Liverpool will have to decide whether to cash in on one of their most prized assets or risk losing him at the end of his deal.

The 20-year-old said in an interview with BBC Sport last month that the contract impasse had nothing to do with money but was about his desire to win trophies after it emerged that he had been what Rodgers described as "an incredible offer," believed to be £100,000-a-week.

"It's not a case of just giving a player what they want -- and I'm not talking about Raheem here, I'm talking in general," Rodgers said in February. "We want to reward our best talents. They're a big part of our future. We're confident that will be in hand and will be agreed very soon."

Sterling was also urged to stay at the club by departing captain Steven Gerrard, who said: ''I think he should sign a new deal. Brendan is a fantastic man manager, he puts a lot of time and effort into every player in the squad."

However, Sky Sports reported that Sterling was angry that details of the contract leaked to the media and that he felt "bullied" into signing a new deal.

Liverpool again missed out on qualifying for the Champions League next season, and have not won a trophy since the League Cup in 2012.

The club declined to comment when contacted by Press Association Sport, though sources told Sky the Reds are still not planning on selling Sterling.

Manchester City have been reported as the favourites to sign Sterling if he does move on from Liverpool, who will expect a transfer fee in the range of £35 million.
