Manchester City confident of signing West Brom's Jonny Evans - sources

Manchester City are confident of securing a deal for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans during the January transfer window, sources close to the Premier League leaders have told ESPN FC.

Evans has been a long-term target for City and they had two offers rejected for the former Manchester United defender in the summer, and they are ready to renew their interest in Evans as they look to bring him to the Etihad Stadium.

The Northern Ireland international is in the final 18 months of current contract at West Brom and he has so far refused to commit his long-term future to the club after talks about a new deal

Arsenal and Everton are also interested in signing the 30-year-old, but sources have told ESPN FC that City are leading the chase and are optimistic of securing the defender.

Real Sociedad central defender Inigo Martinez is on City's list of targets, but the club are further down the line with their pursuit of Evans.

Evans fits the bill for City as he is not cup-tied from playing in the Champions League and his versatility appeals in that he can play at left-back as well as centre-back.

West Brom boss Alan Pardew has previously admitted Evans could leave if the right offer was made this month and is now ready to sell in order to enable him to fund other signings in his squad.
