Tottenham beat Chelsea to sign Swansea striker Fernando Llorente

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Fernando Llorente from Swansea City, snatching him from under the noses of London rivals Chelsea.

Chelsea had hoped to complete a deal for Llorente but Spurs entered the running on Wednesday and won the race to sign the 32-year-old, who scored 15 goals in the Premier League last season.

Llorente, who will cost around £12 million, sources said, has signed a two-year deal with the option of a further year, and he is the oldest player signed by the club under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The move was dependent on Swansea securing a replacement, and it went through as Manchester City's Wilfried Bony returned to the Liberty Stadium.

"I'm very, very happy to join Tottenham, an amazing club," he said in a statement. "I can only say that I have come here to help Tottenham to win titles.

"I am 32 but I think I can learn a lot from Harry Kane and the other players."

After coming up in the Athletic Bilbao academy, Llorente scored 111 goals in 327 games at the Basque club before moving to Juventus in July 2013, where he scored 27 in 92 appearances.

He then moved on to Sevilla in 2015, scoring four times and helping them win the Europa League before joining Swansea last summer.

Spurs had earlier landed £23 million Ivorian defender Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain on a five-year deal, and Llorente is their fifth summer signing after defenders Davinson Sanchez and Juan and goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

Spurs were also hoping to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes on loan before Thursday's transfer deadline, sources said, but a deal could not be worked out in time.

Pursuits for Everton's Ross Barkley and Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon also failed to materialse.

Spurs were open to offers for Vincent Janssen but Stoke City and West Brom, who held talks over signing the Dutchman for around £25m, both dropped their interest on Thursday afternoon.

Janssen started for Netherlands in the World Cup qualifier in France on Thursday evening and is set stay at Spurs and compete with Llorente to be Harry Kane's deputy.
