Borja Mayoral hoping for Real Madrid chance after returning to Bernabeu

Real Madrid forward Borja Mayoral has said he is unsure whether he will play next season but hopes a lack of centre-forward options will keep him in coach Zinedine Zidane's plans.

Madrid youth product Mayoral, 20, has long been tipped to become a senior star, but struggled on loan at Wolfsburg last season and scored only two goals.

The Spain under-21 returned to his hometown club for preseason, having jumped up the pecking order following Alvaro Morata's move to Chelsea, and scored in the 1-1 draw with MLS All-Stars in Chicago on Aug. 2.

Reports have said Getafe are among the Liga clubs keen to take Mayoral on loan, while Madrid could yet pay €180 million for Monaco's Kylian Mbappe.

However, Mayoral told Marca that, as things stood, he expected to start the new season at Madrid.

"Of course I want to stay here at the best club in the world," he said. "I must speak with Zidane to see what he says, but I am happy to be here.

"There is only one centre-forward -- [Karim] Benzema -- so I believe there is a chance."

But Mayoral added that, should he go out on loan again, he would prefer to remain in La Liga this time.

"If I have to leave I want to stay in Spain," he said. "I am grateful that the club [Madrid] have shown confidence in me after a year abroad which was not so good."
