Sandro Wagner commits future to Hoffenheim despite Southampton links

Germany international Sandro Wagner has prolonged his Hoffenheim contract through to 2020, despite a reported €16 million offer from Southampton.

After being part of Germany's renowned 2009 European Under-21 Championship-winning squad, Wagner finally won his first cap for the senior national side this summer and was part of the team which won the Confederations Cup in Russia.

In recent weeks, the 29-year-old had been linked with a move to Premier League, with Bild reporting that Southampton made a bid.

However, Wagner opted to stay at Hoffenheim and the club's sporting director Alexander Rosen praised the deal as "a strong signal" on the club's official website.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann singled out Wagner's mentality, saying: "His character does us good. He keeps the opponent busy, pushes us, makes things emotional out there and is an important personality in the dressing room."

The attacker said that he looked forward to Hoffenheim's first ever European campaign and added that he wants "to help the club continue on its path also in the future."

Wagner has scored 32 goals in 148 Bundesliga matches, and a further 17 goals in 67 second-tier games.

Meanwhile, Hoffenheim have signed 24-year-old left-back Nico Schulz on a three-year deal from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Having only joined the Foals from Hertha Berlin in 2015, Schulz struggled with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and remained a fringe player throughout his time at Borussia Park.
