Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth claims no talks with Tottenham

Juan Foyth in action for Argentina under-20s.

Promising Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth has said he would like to play in Europe but denied he has made any contact with Tottenham Hotspur about a potential move, the defender told Radio Continental.

Foyth, 19, has made seven appearances for the Argentine club, represented Argentina at the Under-20 World Cup earlier this year.

And while he admitted he would like to ply his trade overseas someday, he admitted any Spurs links were just rumours.

"I would really like to play in Europe and opportunities doesn't present very often so if something comes out that is good for the club and for myself, I would be pleased," Foyth said.

When asked if he was headed for Spurs, or if Estudiantes president Juan Sebastian Veron had held any talks with clubs over a transfer, he said: "That's something I read on social media, that my agent or Veron would be travelling or something like that I read ... but I haven't been told anything about that. I usually intend to speak with my agent when there is more concrete things."

Spurs correspondent Dan Kilpatrick explains why Tottenham are unlikely to spend big in the summer window.

Foyth added that he has never had contact with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

He said: "No, no ... I've never spoken with Pochettino or with anybody from Tottenham."

He also distanced himself from reports suggesting that a move to Zenit St Petersburg could also be a possibility, saying: "My agent know what leagues attracts me and Russia is not one of them in this moment."

Editor's note: An initial translation of Foyth's comments suggested the player's agent and Estudiantes president Juan Sebastian Veron had travelled to London to hold negotiations over a possible transfer. We have amended the story to reflect the player's statement that he'd read the information in question on social media.
