Manchester United agree £75m deal for Everton's Romelu Lukaku

Manchester United have announced that they have agreed a deal with Everton to sign Romelu Lukaku.

United are set pay £75 million for the Belgium striker, who will move to Old Trafford after undergoing a medical, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon, and agreeing personal terms.

The 24-year-old trained with United midfielder Paul Pogba at UCLA in California on Thursday and could now be part of the first preseason session in LA on Monday.

The rest of the squad, and manager Jose Mourinho, are due to fly to the United States on Sunday.

Lukaku could make his United debut against LA Galaxy at StubHub Center on July 15. He scored 25 Premier League goals last season and was only beaten to the golden boot by Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane.

Chelsea had made a last-ditch attempt to hijack Lukaku's proposed move to Old Trafford by matching United's bid on Friday. But Lukaku has decided to join United and the deal should be completed over the weekend.

United had been heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, but their interest in the Spain international ended when they began to pursue Lukaku.

Negotiations are also set to continue between United and Everton to take Wayne Rooney back to Goodison Park. The United captain will be allowed to leave Old Trafford after seeing his role in the team reduced under Mourinho last season.

Mourinho knows Lukaku from his time in charge at Chelsea and it was the Portuguese coach who sanctioned the striker's £28m sale to Everton in 2014.

During three seasons at Everton, Lukaku has become one of the Premier League's most prolific strikers, scoring 71 goals in 133 games.

Everton were desperate to keep their main goal scorer, especially after already spending close to £100m this summer to help Ronald Koeman's side break into the top four.

However, Lukaku has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League.
