Toby Alderweireld 'still waiting' on new deal, expects to stay at Tottenham

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has told Belgian newspaper HLN he is yet to be offered a new contract but says he is expecting to play for the club next season.

Alderweireld, 28, signed a five-year deal until 2020 when he joined the club from Atletico Madrid in 2015, but was one of just two senior players at Spurs not to agree a new long-term contract last season.

Reports from Belgium in December claimed he has a release clause of roughly £24.5 million but, at the time, a source at Spurs told ESPN FC that no player has an active release clause in their contract.

"I'm still waiting for a contract proposal," he said. "But in my mind I'm playing for Spurs next season."

Alderweireld is with the Belgium national team preparing for Friday's World Cup qualifier in Estonia and says he is still feeling jaded after making 39 appearances last season before playing in Hong Kong in a postseason friendly.

"I have to admit I'm still a bit tired," he said. "That's normal, because in the Premier League you happen to get little rest. In addition, also there was the trip to Hong Kong."
