Manchester United have opened talks with Michael Carrick about extending his stay at Old Trafford, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.
Carrick has been with United since 2006 and his current deal expires at the end of the season, but the sources said United were ready to offer a one-year extension.
The 35-year-old found his first-team chances limited at the start of the season following the arrival of Paul Pogba, but has fought his way into Jose Mourinho's plans and gone on to feature regularly in all competitions.
United's vice-captain has played a key role in his side's recent 20-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and came on as a second half substitute in the EFL Cup final win over Southampton in February.
Mourinho has been impressed and is ready to sanction another 12-month deal for the midfielder, taking his time at Old Trafford into an 11th season.
Carrick, set to celebrate his testimonial at the end of the season, is happy to stay and if he signs a deal until 2018 that could see him end his career at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, he said United would not give up on a top four Premier League finish, despite Tuesday's 1-1 draw against Everton leaving them adrift of the teams ahead.
"I see it as two points dropped," he said. "It's not easy when it's not going well, but the boys kept trying.
"They kept going and obviously gave us that goal to give us the point. It's a point, but it's nowhere near enough.
"You can't give up on anything and results can go funny ways sometimes. We're obviously giving ourselves a tougher task, but we're not giving up."
