Mario Gomez will decide Wolfsburg future at the end of the season

Wolfsburg striker Mario Gomez will wait until the end of the season before deciding his future.

Gomez, 31, is under contract at Wolfsburg until 2019, but a clause in his contract enables him to leave the club should the Bundesliga side fail to qualify for a European competition.

The Germany international, who has scored four goals in 15 games, only returned to the Bundesliga from Besiktas in the summer.

"Sure, I can imagine staying here," Gomez told Welt am Sonntag when asked about a potential transfer away from Wolfsburg in the summer. "I wouldn't have signed a three-year deal otherwise. But already at Istanbul it was a good idea to look at things after one year."

"I want to live in the moment and savour it. I am back in Bundesliga. I enjoy that. Believe me, I travel to training every day in good spirits, and I am positive that we will bounce back."

Currently 13th in the Bundesliga, the 2015 runners-up and DFB-Pokal winners have been one of the major disappointments this term and have changed their coach from Dieter Hecking to Valerien Ismael and also sacked sporting executive Klaus Allofs.

They trail the European spots by 11 points, and in the DFB-Pokal face a stern test at Bayern Munich in the round of last 16 in early February.

Their sporting demise has already seen Julian Draxler exit the club this winter, and could also lead to several other players leaving Wolfsburg either during the ongoing transfer period or in the summer.
