John Obi Mikel 50-50 over signing Chelsea contract renewal - agent

John Obi Mikel is in talks with Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte about his future and remains "50/50" over whether he will sign a new contract or leave Stamford Bridge, the player's agent has told Goal.

Conte has not selected Mikel -- who missed much of preseason while representing Nigeria in the 2016 Olympic football tournament -- in a single matchday squad this season, fuelling speculation that the Nigeria international's 10-year stay at Chelsea may be coming to an end.

Mikel's current contract expires in the summer and in September he admitted that he is making plans for life after Chelsea in anticipation that he will not be offered an extension, while clubs in Turkey, China and MLS have all been linked with signing him.

Chelsea have often left it late to negotiate new contracts with their older players and Mikel's agent, John Shittu, said: "Obi Mikel and Antonio have been speaking.

"The manager, club and player have been talking. I am not in a position to tell about what they have been speaking about. In the next few weeks things should be clearer.

"We have been having meeting with a few parties who are interested in him. Once we are able to agree the way forward with Chelsea then we will take it from there.

"There are a few clubs in Europe and Asia, they are numerous and are interested in him because he is a quality player, aged only 29, and we just have to speak, so we will see. A lot of interest is there.

"There is no decision made yet and it is still 50/50 whether he will sign or leave. A lot can happen in the next months -- never say never in football."

Mikel is Chelsea's longest-serving player behind captain John Terry, having made more than 350 appearances in all competitions since joining from Lyn Oslo in June 2006, and has won every major club trophy at Stamford Bridge.
