Serge Gnabry matches away goal record, open to Werder Bremen stay

Serge Gnabry says he is not ruling out a prolonged stay with struggling Werder Bremen after he became the first player in 21 years to score in his first five Bundesliga away games.

Gnabry, who joined Bremen from Arsenal in the summer, has made an impressive start to his career in the German top flight, with his effort in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Hamburg meaning he has scored in every away league game he has played so far this season.

The 21-year-old has yet to score at the Weserstadion but sporting director Frank Baumann told Bild: "It's only a matter of time until he also scores at home."

Despite the Germany international's fine form, Bremen have made a poor start to the season and currently sit in the relegation playoff spot in the Bundesliga table, with eight points from 12 games.

Gnabry had been linked with a move even when reports first emerged that he was set to join Bremen, with Bayern Munich then widely reported to have secured a first option. Bremen have consistently rejected the reports.

Gnabry remained coy when Bild asked him about the situation earlier this month that "there is nothing to say about this," and he gave little away in an interview with kicker this week.

"I've clearly positioned myself in the media since August," he said. "Nothing has changed. Everything has been said."

However, when asked by kicker whether it is realistic that he will stay with Bremen for several years, he said: "You'll see. Why not? Football is a fast-moving business. There can be a sudden change -- in both directions."

He said it had been the "right decision" to join Bremen after failing to make an impact at Arsenal, where his contract was due to expire in the summer.

"Arsenal wanted to keep me by all means, but it was about my career," he said. "When a player does not perform, a club will also not show mercy and will not try to keep the player."

He also said that Barcelona would be his dream club, saying: "You are allowed to dream. Who does not want to play with Neymar or [Lionel] Messi?"
