Steven Gerrard is ready to continue his playing career when his contract with the LA Galaxy expires next month, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.
Former England captain Gerrard, 36, saw his season ended early on Sunday after the LA Galaxy lost on penalties to Colorado Rapids in the Major League Soccer playoffs. He did not speak to the media after the game.
Gerrard's contract at LA Galaxy ends in December and it is not yet known if the ex-Liverpool midfielder will prolong his stay in America.
It has been suggested that Gerrard could hang up his boots once he leaves LA Galaxy to focus on going into coaching, but sources close to the player have told ESPN FC that he is open to offers to extend his playing career.
Gerrard is due to return to the United Kingdom next month and plans to assess all the options available to him.
A move back to the Premier League seems unlikely, with the former Liverpool captain having said he could not imagine playing against his boyhood club and Jurgen Klopp unlikely to bring him back in a playing capacity in the winter window.
Gerrard could seek to follow in the path of David Beckham and play for a top European club, with the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder spending short spells with AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain after moving to MLS with the Galaxy.
After Sunday's playoff ouster, Galaxy teammate Ashley Cole apologised to his former England colleague.
Striker Robbie Keane is also out of contract with the Galaxy, but he said he was confident he would return to MLS in 2017, even if he had to leave Los Angeles.
"I'll be playing next year, somewhere," Keane said. "Whether that's here or somewhere else I'll 100 percent be playing in the league."
Landon Donovan's future is less certain after the former United States star returned for the end of the 2016 season after retiring 18 months earlier.
"It's not the time to talk about that. You'll see me -- I don't know where, but..." Donovan said before trailing off.
