Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci: Man City interest was tempting

Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci has admitted he was tempted by Manchester City's interest the summer but feels he made the right decision to stay with Juventus.

New City boss Pep Guardiola was interested in signing Bonucci, 29, in the summer as he looked to bring in a new centre-half, but City were put off by Juve's £51 million valuation and a source told ESPN FC that a bid was never placed for the defender.

Bonucci told Gazzetta dello Sport: "At the start, I did think a bit about it. Guardiola's insistence did get me thinking, but I said no because I listened to my heart.

"I stayed here to aim for big objectives. I never spoke [with Guardiola]. There was just an exchange of ideas with my agent."

City signed England defender John Stones in a £47.5m deal from Everton later in the transfer window and Bonucci is now set to sign a contract extension with the Serie A champions.

Bonucci underlined his commitment to Juve in the Gazzetta interview, saying he and his son play as Juve A and Juve B on computer games "because as far as we are both concerned, no other club exists."

However, both Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini have complained about the fans' expectations in the wake of their Champions League draw with Sevilla this week.

ESPN FC's Italy correspondent, Ben Gladwell, contributed to this report.
