Mamadou Sakho staying at Liverpool despite club's wishes - source

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is set to stay at Anfield after turning down numerous loan offers, a source close to the club has told ESPN FC.

The central defender was told by Liverpool's hierarchy that he needed to leave Merseyside on loan in order to save his future at the club, one source revealed earlier this week.

The source added that Sakho turned down the chance to spend the 2016-17 season at Stoke City or West Bromwich Albion. Turkish side Besiktas were another club that Sakho did not want to join, according to reports.

Liverpool wanted Sakho to depart the club on a temporary basis to help him get his career back on track after enduring a difficult spell in recent months.

He was suspended by UEFA back in April for failing a drugs test and, although he was later cleared, missed the Europa League final and Euro 2016 in his native France.

This summer also saw him sent home from Liverpool's preseason tour to the United States for breaching club rules numerous times.

Sakho's game-time at Anfield is expected to be extremely limited this season with Jurgen Klopp adding Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan to his defensive ranks in the transfer window.
