Man United trying to sell Rojo and Schweinsteiger before buying - sources

Manchester United are struggling to sell both Marcos Rojo and Bastian Schweinsteiger, sources have told ESPN FC, an issue that is complicating the club's pursuit of an experienced central defender.

Having spent close to £150 million in transfer fees alone this summer, the club want to sell players with high wages before they buy again, but that has proven so problematic that they are contemplating moving any further moves back until January.

Manager Jose Mourinho quickly made it clear to Schweinsteiger that he is not in his plans and has also wanted to sell Rojo for some time.

Despite Benfica coming in for the German and clubs from Spain, France and Portugal enquiring about Rojo, none have so far offered a financial package attractive to either player. Sources say both are prepared to stay at United for the time being, where they will try to force their way into the team. Neither has played in the Premier League so far this season.

United maintain an interest in Jose Fonte of Southampton and have made contact over a potential purchase, but any move for the defender looks unlikely unless they can sell first.
