Marseille's Lassana Diarra not being eyed by Monaco amid Galatasaray links

Marseille captain Lassana Diarra could join Galatasaray after Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev said that his club had turned down the chance to sign the midfielder.

Diarra, 31, wants to leave Marseille and L'Equipe reported on Wednesday that he had been involved in lengthy negotiations with Turkish side Galatasaray over a three-year deal.

Speaking on RMC radio on Tuesday evening, Vasilyev said Monaco had previously been sounded out about potential interest in the France international.

"We had an approach but not from our part," Vasilyev said.

When asked if it came from the player or his representatives, Vasilyev replied: "No more comment. We'll leave a bit of ambiguity.

"In any case, I'm very happy with the team and the midfielders that we have. As soon as we took the decision to keep all of our players, it wasn't important to strengthen."

L'Equipe reported on Wednesday that the approach did not come completely out of the blue. Diarra enjoyed a remarkable renaissance at Marseille last season and L'Equipe says that Monaco technical director Claude Makelele, who left his role in June, had called the ex-Real Madrid player earlier this year.

Monaco qualified for the Champions League group stages and beat defending Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain last weekend, however, so it is easy to see why Vasilyev might think they do not need Diarra.

He also ruled out the possibility of players like Bernardo Silva, Fabinho, Tiemoue Bakayoko or Joao Moutinho leaving Monaco on transfer deadline day.

"I have a lot of big clubs who don't stop [calling me]," Vasilyev said. "But for me, the transfer window is finished. After this programme on RMC, my telephone will be turned off. I'll be at home and I hope I'll have a good glass of wine."
