West Brom bid for William Carvalho rejected by Sporting Lisbon - sources

West Bromwich Albion have seen a bid for Sporting Lisbon and Portugal midfielder William Carvalho rejected, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Carvalho, 24, has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time with a number of clubs -- reportedly including Arsenal -- keeping tabs on the defensive midfielder's progress in Portugal after he helped his country win Euro 2016 this summer.

West Brom are prepared to break their transfer record for the second time in the space of 24 hours having signed Nacer Chadli from Tottenham in a £13 million deal on Sunday, but have seen an opening £21m bid rejected.

The Portuguese club are battling to keep hold of their best players, with Leicester chasing Islam Slimani and Adrien Silva and Joao Mario leaving to join Inter Milan, and are reluctant to lose Carvalho too.
