Diego Simeone key to Antoine Griezmann staying with Atletico

Antoine Griezmann sought assurances that manager Diego Simeone would be staying at Atletico Madrid before signing a new contract with the club.

Griezmann, 25, extended his contract with Atletico by one year in June and the attacker, who scored 32 goals in all competitions last season, is now tied to the Spanish club until 2021.

Paris Saint-Germain were one of several teams, with Arsenal reportedly another, who tried to lure Griezmann away from Atleti but the France international said that Simeone was key to him staying.

"I wanted to stay at Atletico and when there was bit of talk of the coach Simeone -- that he was going to leave maybe -- I called straightway," Griezmann told French TV show Telefoot.

"Before signing my contract, I wanted to be sure [that he was staying too]."

Under Simeone, Atletico became Spanish champions in 2014 and they have finished as runners-up in the Champions League twice in the past three seasons.

Griezmann acknowledged that he would have been much more likely to leave himself had the Argentine coach decided that it was time for a new challenge.

"Yes certainly because I love the coach," Griezmann said. "I learn a lot with him and I still need him."

PSG's interest in Griezmann was widely reported but the Euro 2016 top scorer and Player of the Tournament is not thinking of a move to France in the near future.

"I don't know," Griezmann said when asked about joining PSG one day. "You never know. Let's say that the French league is not my priority."
