Juventus end Blaise Matuidi pursuit, switch focus to new targets

Juventus have ended their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi after being told he is not on the market.

Juve had been looking to land the France international as a replacement for Paul Pogba, who joined Manchester United in a world-record £89.3 million transfer, but talks between the two clubs in Monaco last week ended with the French champions saying Matuidi would stay.

PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi has since said he expects the 29-year-old to extend his contract at the Parc des Princes and Marotta told Mediaset: "We enquired about him but PSG's directors told us, kindly and politely, that he is not on the market.

"These things happen often during the transfer window. If they have made a declaration like that, I think we have to take note of it. I think negotiations for the Frenchman are over now, although you can never tell in football, but at the same time I don't think Matuidi will come back onto the market."

Marotta has instead turned his attention to several other targets as he looks to put the final touch to an impressive summer of transfer activity.

Juve have brought in Gonzalo Higuain, Dani Alves, Miralem Pjanic, Marko Pjaca and Medhi Benatia and Marotta said: "We've baked a really nice cake and hopefully we can still find the cherry to put on top of it, but even without, it's a very tasty cake."

Marotta has already said he hopes to sign Colombia international Juan Cuadrado, who spent last season on loan at Juve and is keen on returning from Chelsea, where he has been only substitute in Antonio Conte's first four games in charge.
